Wyre in the blood!

I have been meaning to write about this session for ages and things always have gotten in the way.

Recently I fished on Wyre Lake in Lancaster, Part of the Wyresaide Lakes complex.

On arrival it was raining buckets [seems a bit of a trend has developed] and there was very little wind. I walked around the lake twice looking for fish befiore making any moves. Finally I opted for the “helipad” swim or for the benefit of the world peg 10.

Setting up saw me soaked to the skin but as I sat in the brolly to have a good look accross the swim I saw a fish swirl to the right near the island.

I knew that the island was a good place to start and I had also heard of a “gravel” spot to the left of the island which sounded promising.

I found two good spots, one close to an island bush and the other where I expected the “gravel” spot to be, seven feet of water greeted me on this rod and I was very confident.

For the left hand rod I fished open water between the helipad and a large weed bed which probably belonged to the next swim.

I later found out that the bush to the left of the helipad is a good swim so I will try that next time.

Bait was the trust y XLR8 from Richworth, Fluorocarbon Hooklengths and size 6 Nash Twisters hooks took care of the rigs.

For the first night I was joined by Josh who skillfully set up, casted to the island and caught a 26lb Mirror all in the dark!!

In the morning my “gravel rod” ripped off and a long fight with a big dark mirror followed. As Josh reached for the fish the hook pulled and I was, in a word, wounded!!

Josh left for work and I reset the traps, nothing happened and I thought I had missed the chance. I kept sending out a few baits every hour and settled down for the night.

At 1am the same rod ripped again, I connected with a steam train ratehr than a fish and within seconds I had been snapped on what felt like a massive rock.

Double wounded and wondering whether to even recast I tied a new rig, and guessed the cast. It was way off the mark so I tried again and got it spot on, I could feel the lead “donk” as it hit the hard “gravel” spot.

Knackered and thinking about what went wrong I zipped back down only to be woken by a screaming run from the same rod.

This time I managed to get it in after a short scrap, a nice 23lb Mirror was my reward…

Now I was buzzing, confidence restored the cast sailed back to the spot, thirty minutes later and it was away again…. This time the rod was buckled in two, a big slow moving lump attached to the end, I hoped that nothing gave way and the fish plodded round until I could get the neyt under her…

32lb, Twisted Fully Scaled…. On asking Matt Birkin which fish it was he smiled with glee, “quality mate” he said “we thought it was dead” – “No mate” I replied, “it is alive and well!”
